I was at the National Gallery waiting for somebody. And I’m looking at a pointing of a beach scene at Deauville. The women had long dresses and parasols. I’ve always loved those paintings. And I was standing there waiting and all of the sudden something just came over me. The words in my head were, ‘I understand what art is.’ It was so physically intense, I almost fell on the floor. I guess in the past it would be called a religious experience. You just feel awash in something wonderful.
